The present article aims to discuss the origin of literature in Maranhão territory with the purpose of analyzing and understanding the historical-social-ideological scenario of the State, mainly from the 19th century. In addition, it is intended to discuss the formation of literary identity to explain the literary phenomena of the time and, based on this, to highlight the main reasons that collaborated with the construction of the term Brazilian Athens. It is intended to discuss how the process of literary creation occurred in Maranhão society as a way of analyzing the construction of the writers' behavior, which gave rise to the first literary movement in Maranhão, Romanticism, whose main writers were Odorico Mendes and Gonçalves Dias who put Maranhão literature on the national scene. In addition, it is intended to explain how the course of development of the Brazilian Athens occurred until the decline of literary development in Maranhão with the purpose of understanding this historical path in the construction of Maranhão literature.
