Abstract

The purpose of this article is to present the historical and ideological foundations of the term “empowerment”, approaching the roots and functions that “empowerment” fulfills in the political strategies proposed by feminist movements since the 1980s. An important part of the anti-oppressive feminist project, the notion of “empowerment” spread rapidly in the 1990s and became a “fashionable word”. The institutionalization of gender issues by multilateral organizations fostered the dissemination of the term “empowerment” as a proposal for political practice. In these organisms, “empowerment” took on a liberal character. Within social movements, however, the term “empowerment” has appeared as a synonym for strengthening the autonomy of the oppressed. Through a bibliographic review and based on dialectical historical materialism, it seeks to reveal the ideological character and the material bases of the term for the purposes of political strategy to confront capitalism as a totality and the particular oppressions articulated to it.
